Call to action for local abortion access
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario has proposed changes that could limit safe abortion access in community clinics. Providers would have to engage in practices that are discriminatory and NOT evidence-based.
This includes:
Requiring clients to bring someone else to their appointment - and potentially to have support for 24 hours. People keep their abortion private for various reasons, and many are at risk for intimate partner violence.
Denying care because of someone’s weight. Studies show the relative safety of providing first and second trimester surgical abortion care to folks with larger bodies/higher BMI.
Requiring fasting that is not medically necessary and affects comfort. Fasting can contribute to nausea, difficult emotional coping, and more recovery time in clinic.
