About Choice in Health Clinic (CIHC)
Choice in Health Clinic (CIHC) is a non-profit abortion clinic providing abortion services, STI testing, contraception, and systems navigation to clients across the Greater Toronto Area and beyond.
Driven by the desire to increase access and abolish shame, CIHC recognizes that abortion is not merely permissible under the law, but essential, important, positive, and powerful. Position Summary
The Abortion Care Nurse provides compassionate, client-centered nursing care throughout the abortion care journey. Responsibilities include conducting assessments, providing counselling and education, administering medications, supporting abortion procedures, monitoring recovery, and collaborating with an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
This role is ideal for a nurse who is passionate about reproductive justice, abortion access, and trauma-informed care.
Position Details
Job Title: Abortion Care Nurse (RPN)
Status: Contract Part-Time
Duration of Position: One Year with possibility of renewal
Schedule: 3 days per week (24 hours)
Reports To: Operations Manager
Compensation
RPN: $29.00-$32.00 per hour, based on experience.
RPN with MDR certification: $30.00- $35.00 per hour, based on experience.
As part of employment offer, the successful candidate will be asked to obtain Medical Device Reprocessing (MDR) Certification within their first six months of employment (with training and certification costs fully covered by CIHC). Successful completion of MDR certification will make the candidate eligible for an enhanced compensation range.
Key Responsibilites
Clinical Care
Conduct comprehensive client assessments, including obstetrical and health histories, while identifying potential contraindications and communicating concerns to the healthcare team.
Assess and monitor vital signs and perform ECGs when required.
Administer medications as prescribed or under medical directives, including inhalation, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous medications.
Monitor and manage medication side effects and adverse reactions.
Perform abdominal and/or transvaginal ultrasound imaging to confirm and assess pregnancy.
Provide education regarding medication and procedural abortion care, recovery, and contraceptive options.
Obtain informed consent for procedures, contraception insertions (IUDs and implants), and pathology collection.
Support clients through decision-making processes using trauma-informed and client-centered counselling approaches.
Provide referrals and resources related to medical, emotional, and social support.
Complete daily narcotic and medication counts.
Support the maintenance of procedure rooms, sterile fields, instruments, and equipment.
Respond appropriately to clinical emergencies, including hemorrhage, airway compromise, anaphylaxis, over-sedation, overdose, and seizure activity.
Monitor and support clients during recovery and discharge.
Conduct follow-up care for procedural and medication abortion clients.
Respond to client inquiries and clinical concerns by phone.
Expanded Responsibilities with MDR certification
Follow CIHC infection prevention, sterilization, and Medical Device Reprocessing (MDR) protocols.
Procedure room & instruments: Maintain sterile areas, set up/break down trays, and clean/reprocess instruments.
Pregnancy tissue: Prepare tissue to assess completeness, gestational age, or absence of products of conception.
Team Collaboration
Provide accurate verbal and written handovers between procedure and recovery staff.
Collaborate effectively with physicians, nurses, counsellors, and administrative staff.
Participate in clinical team meetings, training sessions, and quality improvement initiatives.
Contribute to a culture of safe, dignified, inclusive, and evidence-based abortion care.
Must-Have Qualifications
Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) in good standing.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Demonstrated nursing assessment and clinical decision-making skills.
Experience with venipuncture and intravenous insertion.
Experience administering medications and managing IV therapies.
Strong health education and client teaching skills.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and documentation skills.
Fluency in spoken and written English.
Experience using Electronic Medical Records (EMRs).
Genuine respect for clients and demonstrated ability to build therapeutic relationships.
Commitment to a pro-choice philosophy and abortion access.
Commitment to working within anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and inclusive care frameworks.
Nice-to-Have Qualifications
Previous experience in reproductive health, sexual health, family planning, abortion care, women's health, emergency care, ambulatory care, or perioperative nursing.
Experience performing ultrasound imaging.
Counselling and crisis intervention experience.
Experience providing trauma-informed care.
Familiarity with Accuro EMR.
Medical Device Reprocessing (MDR) certification.
ACLS certification.
Experience supporting conscious sedation procedures.
Experience working in community health, non-profit healthcare, or interdisciplinary clinical settings.
